CIMUN: Where Diplomacy Meets Reality
-
At the Chicago International Model United Nations, we believe Model UN should be a mirror to the world—not a fantasy of it. While many conferences encourage a "rose-colored" approach to international relations, CIMUN is founded on the principles of Political Realism.
We believe that true diplomacy is the difficult, often frustrating, but essential work of navigating competing national interests and the inherent limits of the global order. At CIMUN, delegates do not just debate; they navigate the high-stakes, messy reality of statecraft. Our mission is to prepare students for the world as it is, through:
Hard-Nosed Negotiation: Learning why consensus is a rare, strategic achievement rather than an automatic outcome.
Policy Rigor: Moving beyond generic rhetoric to craft strategies that reflect the actual constraints of national interest.
The Power of Information: Leveraging an integrated media ecosystem where news, leaks, and narratives serve as active levers of political power.

CIMUN is not a collection of isolated conference rooms; it is a single, interconnected global simulation. Here, the boundaries between committees dissolve. A resolution passed in the General Assembly doesn't just sit on paper—it ripples across the conference, fundamentally shifting the geopolitical landscape for every other delegate in the building. When a cabinet authorizes a war or a delegation leaks classified information, the fallout is felt across the entire conference.
The Reality of Statecraft We provide the framework, but you provide the tension. At CIMUN, diplomacy is an active, visceral experience. Our simulation is built for depth and consequences:
A Living Media Landscape: Watch international headlines break in real-time, streamed directly to your devices via the CIMUN News Network. Use the press to plant stories, counter narratives, or force your adversaries into the light.
The Power of the Backroom: Navigate the high-stakes world of private summits, clandestine backroom meetings, and tense negotiations in bunkers. Here, power is brokered in the shadows before it is ever put to a vote.
Total Simulation Integration: From Cabinets holding emergency summits and declaring war, to delegates managing domestic protests and humanitarian crises, your decisions have immediate, tangible impacts.

Since 2003, CIMUN has stood as a fixture in the MUN circuit: an independent, professional-grade institution built by practitioners, for future leaders.
For 23 years, we have operated on a singular premise: Model UN should not be a game of make-believe. We began as an experiment in institutional independence, moving away from the traditional "student-club" model. Instead, we formed a lean, volunteer organization composed of seasoned student leaders and experts from fields ranging from international law to political journalism. Our goal was to create a simulation where the scale of global conflict and collaboration finally matched the complexity of the world as it actually exists.
Over the last two decades, that vision has transformed into an anchor of the North American Model UN landscape. Thousands of delegates have passed through our doors, moving beyond the standard script of "easy resolutions" to engage in the genuine labor of statecraft.
Today, CIMUN is more than an annual conference; it is a laboratory for the next generation of global leaders. Our legacy is built on the students who have sharpened their teeth on the reality of political consequences, the faculty advisors who return for our academic rigor, and a staff committed to the industry’s highest production values. As we look to the future, our mission remains unchanged: to challenge the status quo, embrace the friction of international politics, and serve as the premier destination for those who seek to understand the world not as it is wished, but as it truly is.
