Position Paper - Afghanistan - 2009 - UN General Assembly -
Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, and Moldova recently formed and alliance as a joint cooperative organization which is known as the Organization for Democracy and Development. The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan has been in a direct diplomatic relation with Georgia, which was established on July 12, 1994. The stabilization of GUAM is a crucial factor in helping many allies and neighbors of Afghanistan considering the potential the region holds.
Afghanistan is a strong supporter of the stabilization of GUAM because of the unfortunate occurrences throughout the region. Afghanistan and Armenia have relations and Afghanistan supports the current attempt at a transit route from Azerbaijan through Armenia in order to reach the Naxcivian Republic. Afghanistan realizes other issues such as human trafficking, financial concerns, and internal conflicts between governments are crucial items to better development and stability in the region, especially with the major shipping routes for oil and natural gas. Although we are suffering current invasions attacks by the Taliban and Al Qaeda, with aid from the United States, Afghanistan will do as much as we can to help the current situation at hand.
Afghanistan believes that in order to ensure secure development, stabilization must be dealt with immediately and efficiently. The UN needs to send in humanitarian aid to try and help impoverished territories and stop human trafficking. The line of demarcation through Kerch Strait and the Sea of Azox dispute between Ukraine and Russia needs to be solved by continuing discussions, which should later lead to the signing of the 2003 agreement. The United Nations will strongly encourage the removal of troops from Moldova and UN troops should be sent in instead to oversee and help build up a new government and infrastructure and stop the poverty stricken cycle. Finally, the UN will need to strongly encourage once more the departure of Russian troops from Georgian territory in order for the complete success of the development of the region. Although the help Afghanistan can offer is limited, we are willing to do what we can in order to successfully rebuild the stability and development in the GUAM region
