We have posted our Committee Topics. Our simulations do not exist in a vacuum! These Committee Topics are specifically selected by our Sim Directors and exist within their strategic mindset on how they plan to present their simulation.

Staff

Summer is busy season for those putting CIMUN 2010 together. On a hot Friday at the end of June, 20 staff members representing the Steering Committee and Director-level staff convened in a hidden but spacious conference room on the Northside of Chicago. Directors are the responsible for various departments at the conference – an integral member of the management team overseeing the entire event. By July, everyone is moving forward to achieving their pre-conference goals, such as the staffing of the remaining positions, the development of background information, preparing budgets, and drafting plans. This year’s slate is particularly impressive, not just in their experience and credentials, but also geographically. The Friday meeting required Directors to convene from across the country, and so it was nice to see old friends not seen since the last CIMUN!

One of the most astonishing things about this year's staff is the large amount of returning delegates. As CIMUN began to grow in size and quality, it was natural for delegates to want to come back and be a part of the conference! This year, we expect almost half of our staff to be returning delegates, now in university.

One of the most interesting things about this year's staff is that many of them are former delegates, now leaders of their own Model UN teams at their respective universities.

One of the most important things about the CIMUN staff training is the personal approach to developing in quality managers. In this photo above, Suhail and Rehan work intently on training the next-generation of CIMUN leadership, such as Trevor and Tobi also pictured here.

Many of our staff come in from out of town. Its funny that there is a cut off arm in this pic!

A full list of the Directors for CIMUN 2010 are below - Good luck to them all!

I am doing this from memory so if I got it wrong or left anyone out please let me know and I'll fix it. There are quite a lot of Director-level staff, though total, we have to manage a total staff of 100, maintaining a 10-1 delegate-to-staff ratio.

Like many Model United Nations conferences, CIMUN offers what is called an International Press Delegation (IPD), where delegates represent different international publications. At the conference, delegates author news articles which are then physically published and distributed throughout the conference.

The Department of Media is a sub-department under the pervue of the Department of Simulations at CIMUN. Its primary operational tasks are to:
1. Fully develop the role of the media as the representation of civil society (along with NGOs represented), and to further its role within the 4-day experiential simulation,

2. Engage students with an experiential education model that seeks to teach students the role of the media globally, and the interaction between the state and media in a comparative context,

3. Provide efficient communication and media distribution between delegates across committees and the International Press Delegations, and

4. Provide students with technology, and facilitate training, exposure and execution to provide high-quality real time media content for the entire conference and the general public.

What does this mean for CIMUN delegates?

The journalism component will have a much larger presence both before and at CIMUN. For a few years, we have taken great resources to run the CIMUN News Network (CNN), our conference wide televised programming. Recently, we have had to cut this program to reallocate its resources. This year, we will be bringing CNN back, but with a further focus towards delegate development and participation, as well as integration into the simulation. By bringing together a team of producers, writers and presenters, delegates willl work together in developing cohesive programming for conference participants at-large.

In addition to CNN, we seek to build on the success of the CIMUN Chronicle, the conference wide newspaper. Incorporating a more streamlined and efficient publiciation process, we seek to increase access to the content produced by IPD delegates by developing web-based distribution points. For example, delegates will be expected to write shorter, intermittant, or time-sensitive updates on a live blog.

Through the power of technology, we seek to document CIMUN 2010 in print and film, online and on paper.

Participation in the Department of Media, in either the Chronicle or CNN, is by application only. This program should be of particular interest to those interested in journalism.
