Discussion and Introduction
Hey Delegates!
My name is Alissa and I will be representing Mongolia in the SCO.
I decided that we should maybe start talking before the conference to get the various countries positions so that when we get to the conference we can get right into it! So what are your ideas on topic 1:extending the permanent membership???

Aw, cool! I thought this
Aw, cool! I thought this thread was dead.
I'm Julia and I will be representing Iran.
Iran agrees that the SCO needs to be expanded. We are sensitive to those who wish to preserve the current atmosphere, but the rest of the world isn't standing still. With the western powers ever trying to expand their reach, we need to grow and expand with them, and we can't do that with half of the political power in Asia missing from the SCO.
We're confident that the SCO would benefit from our membership. We share the same goals of the SCO, particularly that of security and stability in the region. We recognize that one current goal of the SCO - energy cooperation - can not be very effective without Iran, and we would like to help in that respect. We also can be of assistance to countries looking for access to the Persian Gulf, and are willing to coordinate efforts with China and Russia (as well as the other countries in the SCO) to help combat trafficking in Afghanistan.
As for energy, Iran is currently scrambling to find alternate sources of energy. We have a unsustainable growth in demand each year, and we are moving toward our goal of producing 20,000 megawatts of electricity via nuclear energy by 2015, in an effort to preserve dwindling oil reserves.
Do any countries have questions or want clarification on any of the above?
Cheers,
Julia, Iran

Hey I'm Therese and I will be representing China.
China thinks that we should not make any countries permanent members immediately, but that Pakistan and possibly Iran should be considered for future membership by putting them on a timetable where they would have to prove that they meet the criteria and are are trustworhty/stable. All changes should be gradual and countries should be held to a rigorous standard in order to preserve the legitimacy and strength of the SCO. We also think that Afghanistan should be considered for observer status so as to allow a slightly Western perspective (without allowing this perspective to have any power over our decisions beyond an informational standpoint) and for the SCO to exert a positive influence on Afghanistan that previously the Western countries prohibited us from.
What do you guys think? Iran I'd particularly like to hear your thoughts for why you should be a member, as China is slightly skeptical of backing you fully unless you persuade us to.
Looking forward to the conference!
