After the era of Nikita Khrushchev, Leonid Brezhnev led the Soviet Union as the longest serving General Secretary of the Communisty Party. During the second era of his reign, Brezhnev was in constant conflict with the West and also played a part in international diplomatic developments including the invasion in Afghanistan.
